The Gap Band
This septet was led by three brothers, Charles, Ronnie and Robert Wilson.
They took their name from the initials of three streets, Greenwood, Archer and Pine, in their home-town of Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA.
After two minor US hits in 1977, this post Sly Stone funk band hit the R & B Top 10 with 'Shake', 'Steppin' (Out)' and 'I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance'.
The last release is better known by its subtitle, 'Oops, Upside Your Head' and this infectious dance-based song reached the UK Top 10 in 1980.
The Gap Band continued to score substantial soul/dance hits, 'Burn Rubber (Why Do You Warma Hurt Me)' (1980), 'You Dropped A Bomb On Me' and 'Party Train' (both 1982), all topped that particular chart, while 'Big Fun' reached the UK Top 5 in 1986.
Three years later they recorded the theme song to the film 'I'm Gonna Git You Sucka', a pastiche of 70's 'blaxplotation' movies and later in 1990 the group released the Round Trip album.
Shortly after, the group ceased recording for nearly six years to concentrate on touring. In 1995 the Gap Band returned with Ain't Nothing But a Party, quickly followed by 1996's V Jammin. Twenty years after the release of their debut album, the Gap Band is still going strong; they remain an influential urban group of the 1980s, sampled by numerous hip-hop artists
In 2001, the band toured the United Kingdom and released the album 'Love At Your Fingatips'.
